By JIM ABRAMS - WASHINGTON (AP) - Democrats are making a pre-election pitch to give Social Security recipients a one-time payment of $250, part of a larger effort to convince senior voters that their party, and not Republicans, will best look out for the 58 million people who get the government retirement and disability benefits.
The $250 check is meant to make up for a second year without a cost-of-living increase due to low inflation.
$250 won't nearly make up for the costs to seniors of Obamacare, the collapsing economy, lost retirement, deficit caused inflation, and lost home value due to property devaluation. That Obama thinks seniors are gullible enough to fall for a lousy $250 bribe in exchange for a midterm vote shows just how infantile democrats think old people are. I would be profoundly insulted. Let's hope all seniors see it that way.

Rationally, a zero COLA for SS is superlatively good news, as it postpones the day of reckoning for the entire ponzi scheme that SS has become. Instead, we get the wealthiest generation in America moaning on TV and pols rushing to shovel some "free money" their way.
In a few years time when the delyed inflation from Obama hits, they'll be getting 8 and 9% COLA's that will speed the end of the SS trust fund. And nobody will be talking about billing them (me) for the $250 back.
Excellent analysis Bill. There will likely be nothing left of SS by the time we get there. I'm certainly not planning on it. The expectation, by baby-boomers through the "Me" generation, that social security is THE primary funding source for their self-absorbed, retirement life-styles is preposterous.
I'm eligible for it early basis in only 3 years, but plan to wait as long as possible. I don't think you can legally refuse it - even if you don't need it.
I thought you could refuse it. My mom retired about 10 years ago and since her house and cars were paid for, had a nice retirement from WGC, and had a career's worth of investments built up, she asked me if I thought she should not accept her SS that was on it's way because she didn't really need it. Maybe she thought you could but hadn't really investigated it.
